When an interviewer hits you with a zinger, be prepared to answer effectively:
- Take a beat. You're being evaluated on how you react under stress. Maintain your composure and think before you speak.
- Ask for clarification. If you're legitimately confounded, ask the interviewer for a bit more information. It'll demonstrate your thoughtfulness, buy you time and provide details which may help.
- Don't feel pressured to come up with the "right" answer. Typically, the interviewer is more interested in your problem-solving approach and thought process. If you can't figure out the answer on the fly, focus on explaining how you'd do it if you had the right information, resources and time.
